Our Welding Consulting Process

Every engagement follows a structured approach from assessment to certification

01

Requirements Assessment

We review your project specifications, materials, and regulatory requirements. Whether you need a single WPS for a specific joint configuration or a full compliance audit of existing procedures, we start with a thorough assessment of your needs.

02

Procedure Development

Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and supporting Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) are developed to AS1554 requirements. Each procedure addresses base materials, joint design, welding process, consumables, preheat, and post-weld heat treatment parameters.

03

Qualification Testing

Welder Qualification Records (WQR) are generated through structured testing programs. Your welders perform test coupons that undergo mechanical testing (tensile, bend, impact) or NDT verification depending on the procedure category and application requirements.

04

Compliance Auditing

We audit your existing welding documentation, procedures, and practices against AS1554 and project-specific requirements. Gap analysis reports identify non-conformances and provide corrective action recommendations.

05

Training & Support

On-site or workshop-based training for your welding team. We cover procedure requirements, quality control processes, and documentation practices so your team maintains compliance independently.

Welding Consulting — Common Questions

A welding consultant provides expert guidance on welding standards, procedure development, quality assurance, and compliance. We help you develop WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), qualify your welders through structured testing programs, audit your existing processes against AS1554 requirements, and set up documentation systems that satisfy client and regulatory audits. Essentially, we bring practical welding engineering expertise to your project — whether you're a fabrication shop needing their first WPS or a mining company managing a complex multi-site welding program.

Our primary standard is AS/NZS 1554, the Australian Standard for structural steel welding. We work across multiple parts: AS1554.1 (structural steel — carbon and low-alloy), AS1554.5 (stainless steel), and AS1554.6 (aluminium and aluminium alloys). Beyond AS1554, we also develop procedures to AWS D1.1 where required by international clients or project specifications, and can adapt procedures to meet client-specific requirements that go beyond the minimum standard.

A standard WPS typically takes 2–3 weeks from initial assessment through to completed documentation. This includes developing the procedure, qualifying the weld through PQR testing, mechanical testing of the test coupon (tensile, bend, impact where required), and final documentation delivery. For urgent requirements, we can fast-track the process — contact us to discuss your timeline. Additional procedures for the same material and process combination (with different thickness ranges or joint types) can often be developed more quickly using existing PQR data.

Yes — compliance auditing is one of our core consulting services. We review your existing WPS, PQR, and WQR documentation against the applicable standard and project specifications. The audit covers procedure completeness, qualification coverage, welder authorisation currency, and documentation control practices. You receive a detailed gap analysis report identifying any non-conformances, along with prioritised corrective action recommendations to bring your welding operations into compliance.

We offer both. Welder qualification testing and procedure qualification require our workshop facilities for controlled test conditions. However, compliance audits, procedure reviews, and on-site assessments can all be conducted at your workshop or project site anywhere in Western Australia. We regularly work with clients across the Perth metropolitan area as well as regional and remote sites. For Perth metro clients, our Forrestdale workshop provides easy access from all major industrial areas.
